Units of analysis
All campsite establishments registered as such in the corresponding Tourist Office Register of each Autonomous Community.
Tourist campsites, are understood to be those land spaces which are duly delimited, equipped and conditioned, destined to habitually provide people, after the payment of a stipulated price, with a place to live outdoors for a limited period of time for holiday or tourism purposes, and using as a residence mobile homes, caravans, tents or other similar easily transportable elements.
Tourist campsites are classified, in accordance with their installations and the services offered, into the following four categories: luxury, first-class, second-class and third-class.
Scope
All establishments in the country are investigated.
Definition of variables
Estimated open establishments:
Number of establishments open for the season as estimated by the survey.
An establishment open for the season is that establishment in which the reference month is included within its opening period.
Number of vacancies estimated by the survey of the establishments open for the season.
For campings the number of vacancies corresponds to the authorised capacity of persons.
Estimated lots
The total number of estimated lots in a campsite is defined as the sum of: estimated number of lots plus estimated number of bungalows plus estimated number of caravans owned by the campsite plus estimated undivided area for free camping in establishments open for the season.
A bungalow is defined as a fixed construction within the campsite destined as an accommodation unit.
A caravan owned by the campsite is defined as a mobile accommodation unit which is rented out for a stipulated price.
The undivided area is a section of the campsite where free camping is allowed.
Travellers checked in
All persons arriving and who stay at the establishment.
Travellers are classified by their country of residence, and people residing in Spain are classified by the Autonomous Community they usually live in.
Overnight stays or occupied vacancies
An occupied vacancy or overnight stay is understood to be every night a traveller spends in the establishment. As occurs with traveller check in, the occupied vacancies are broken down according to place of residence.
Total number of occupied lots
Understood as the sum of: occupied lots plus occupied bungalows plus occupied caravans owned by the campsite plus the occupied undivided area.
Average Stay
This variable is an estimate of the number of days which, on average, the travellers spend at the campsite, and is calculated as the quotient between the overnight stays and the number of travellers.
Level of occupancy by lots
Is understood as the percentage-based relation between the total number of lots occupied during the month and those available in the campsite during the same period multiplied by the days in the reference month.
Level of occupancy by lots at weekends
Percentage-based relation between the number of lots occupied on Friday and Saturday in the reference week and the total number of lots, multiplied by the number of days analysed, in this case two.
Occupied personnel
Its defined as the group of people, remunerated and not remunerated, who contribute with their work to the production of goods and services in the establishment during the reference period of the survey, even when they work outside the premises.
Tourist area
Municipality where the concentration of tourist amenities is significant.
Tourist region
Group of municipalities where tourist inflow is specifically located. Information is presented on the areas that attract the greatest amount of tourists.
Collection of the information
The enquiry pertaining to basic data refers to one full week of the month, randomly selected, in such a way that all the establishments cover the whole month between them.
Since January 2003, a second enquiry is performed regarding monthly totals; total number of travellers, overnight stays and lots occupied during the whole month, alongside the number of days the establishment has been open during the reference month.
The information published for each variable -travellers, overnight stays and occupied lots- is estimated on the basis of the data provided in the monthly module.
Campsites provide information monthly, after completing a questionnaire and a monthly module, which is forwarded to the National Statistics Institute. Similarly, it is possible to submit the information online via the ARCE system, directly completing the questionnaire on-screen.
Dissemination of the information
The information is presented on different levels of geographical breakdown: national, Autonomous Community, provincial, tourist regions and areas. The regions (group of municipalities) have been considered, as well as the municipalities where tourist inflow is specifically located.
The data estimates that are published are made using the data provided by the establishments in the reference week, except for the three, four and five gold star strata, where they are calculated using the monthly totals also.
