The objective of the research is to study the socio-demographic and criminological characteristics of the convictions.
Compilation
Until 31 December 2006, the information was collected quarterly, via paper-based questionnaires that were completed by legal bodies (Courts of First Instance and Trial, Trial Courts, Criminal Courts, Courts for Violence Against Women, Provincial Courts) for each ruling passed.
Beginning with reference year 2007, based on the Partnership Agreement signed between the INE and the Ministry of Justice in July 2007, the primary source of the data to compile these statistics has been changed for the purpose of improving the coverage and quality of the same.
Use is made of the Central Register of Convicted Persons and Rebels, from the information contained in the conviction notes corresponding to the condemnatory rulings registered in the same.
Content
Different aspects of the registers of the convicts contained in the Register are researched, related to both socio-demographics and criminology. Among those aspects studied of a socio-demographic nature, are the sex, age and nationality of the offender. Regarding the aspects of a criminological nature, it studies the type of crime, type of sentence and degree of committing (consummation or attempt), according to the Criminal Code. Results are obtained regarding the persons convicted, as well as on the crimes and the sentences.
Dissemination
Results are published annually, on national and Autonomous Community levels, on the INE website
The results are published in the month of October of the year following the reference year
