This program is used to view statistical tables created by the INE. Nearly all the Institute's statistical production is published in this format. PC-Axis offers:
A simple user interface based on a spread sheet
Customised tables. The user decides which variables and values to use and in which order.
Preparation of statistical graphs
Creation of theme-based maps (installation of PX-Map and map collections required)
Export and copy data to other applications
Why is PC-Axis necessary?
PC-Axis is used to view the publications the INE disseminates using an electronic format. It is included in all CD-ROM published since the year 2000 and can also be downloaded from the Institute's web site.
PC-Axis is not required to view publications on the Internet, since INEbase incorporates a viewer including a series of different functions. Nevertheless, PC-Axis is required to work with INEbase tables exported to said format, which -on the other hand- presents a series of advantages as regards the presentation of information, distribution and nesting of variables, export to different formats, and graphic and geographical analysis.
The installation procedure will associate PC-Axis files saved in your system to this program (*.px extension). Therefore, the Internet browser will recognise them as such and will directly launch the PC-Axis program. If this does not occur, check the browser setup in the section referring to associated applications.
How to obtain PC-Axis. Free download or installation from CD-ROM
1. From a CD-ROM. All INE publications on CD-ROM include an installable copy of the latest version of PC-Axis, compatible with Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME. The most recent also include the complementary programme PX-Map and the collections of maps for the different reference years the information refers to.
2. Free download: these programs can be downloaded free of charge from this website.
Latest version of PC-Axis (2007) and map publishing with PX-Map
If you are already an experienced
PC-Axis user, we recommend you instal the new version of the programme, PC-Axis
2007, that introduces some new relevant improvements, such as the
possibility of displaying statistical maps that are generated by the
user via the complementary PX-Map programme, which must also
be installed (PX-Map 2001 version available).
To generate a map, the table must contain a territorial variable (provinces for example). Said variable must occupy the stub of the table; if this is not the case, the variable must be rotated until located in this position. The map represents a single theme variable. Therefore, if the table has more than one, the value selection must be performed as follows: all or some of the values can be selected for the variable represented in the map; only one value can be selected for the other theme variables.
PCAxis 2007. 6 Mb auto-exec file.
This is the latest version available. Allows both a presentation of the publications, chapters and sections based on the structure of the CD-ROM directories or as chosen by the user in his/her own system, and an organisation of the tables based on specific indices files, as INE publications were structured up until 2003. Link to PX-Map.
PXMap 2001. 22 Mb auto-exec file.
This complementary program is used to construct maps defined by the PC-Axis program user and is compatible with PC-Axis 2001 and superior versions.
Version for Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT/ 2000.
Note: Since this is the first version available, the installation procedure is in English. Sorry for any inconvenience. Simply accept the options that appear by default.
2004-2009 Map collection.
16 Mb auto-exec
file.
The files required to publish maps will be installed on your system, as long as PC-Axis 2001 (or superior) and PX-Map 2001 are also installed. Likewise, the table consulted must have been configured by the INE to allow the use of maps. For example, after installing the appropriate software, you will be able to prepare maps when downloading PC-Axis tables from the following INEbase publication:
