The INE has published the Spanish Statistical Magazine since 1958 with the intention of stimulating and disseminating statistical research from all Spanish scientists. As with any human work, various types of viscissitudes have been experienced over its more than forty years of existence. In a brief summary of its history three stages may be differentiated: The first dates back to 1987 in which the initial management was assigned to the Head of the Studies Service. The first head writer was José Luis Sánchez-Crespo; the second, includes the period 1987-1995 in which Daniel Peña was designated as Director of the Magazine; the third, ranges from 1995 up to 2001, a period in which for various circumstances there was no director of the magazine which, among other consequences, led to a lack of regularity in publishing the magazine. Faced with this situation, the INE's Management Board decided in February to nominate the Director of the Magazine and a new writing board.
As for its editorial line, in an attempt to synthesise the ideas set out in the presentations of different stages of the magazine the following basic guidelines are summarised:
Methodological articles related with statistical projects, either because they are researching economic and social aspects which have not yet been studied or because they signify substantial modifications with respect to the existing, among other causes due to necessities of statistical harmonisation between EU member states due to comparability demands of their results.
Articles whose content is the analysis of new statistical models and examples of their practical applications.
Articles on the history of the statistic.
The objective of the Spanish Statistical Magazine is twofold: on the one hand, this is conceived as a means of communication so that users of official statistics know the methodology on which their elaboration is based at depth and on the other hand, as an analysis forum and discussion of statistical methodology and its applications.
In another order of ideas, the magazine is offered as a dissemination vehicle so that authors can publish their research work although following the general criteria of magazines of this nature, they will go through an anonymous evaluation process. The periodicity of the magazine will be quarterly.
Finally, readers are requested to collaborate to the magazine. This is expressed via the suggestions and critics that we receive.
