Agricultural holdings are used as the elementary information unit and data relative to the organisation and structure of the sector and the use of resources such as earth, water, machinery and workforce is provided.

The fundamental objectives of the Agrarian Census 1999 were the following:

a) To evaluate the situation of Spanish agriculture and to follow up the structural development of agricultural holdings as well as obtaining comparable results between all European Union Member States.

b) To obtain a framework or directory of agricultural holdings that served to carry out sample designs of sectorial agricultural surveys.

c) To fulfil the legal regulations set by the European Union in the different Council regulations as well as dealing with national statistical requirements and other international requests for statistical information on the agrarian sector.
