Foto Lector de texto The Mercantile Companies (MC) were created by Order of 30 September 1938. The Amendment and Adaptation Act of Mercantile Legislation to the Community directives, the Royal Order of 22 December 1989 on the amended text of the Limited Companies Act and the subsequent Regulation of the Mercantile Register, affected the operative and conceptual sector of the statistics in question as from January 1990.

Their objective is to measure the companies' demography. The statistics provide monthly information on the companies set up as well as on those dissolved or restructured their capital. Dat are obtained by provinces, autonomous communities and for the whole country, on the basis of the data supplied by the Central Mercantile Register which collects information throughout the country, including Ceuta and Melilla.
