Passenger Transport Statistic

Objectives

The passenger transport statistics is a short-term monthly statistic whose objective is to provide information on the number of transported passengers. Information is offered on urban and interurban transport.

1. Urban transport

Urban transport is that which begins and ends within urban area or areas which can be urbanised, defined in agreement with urban legislation, or which is exclusively dedicated to communicating different urban areas located within the same municipality.

URBAN TRANSPORT BY BUS STATISTIC

This covers passengers transported by every company, both public and private (municipal companies) that carries out this activity. The information is broken down by autonomous communities (as long as statistical secrecy facilitates this).

URBAN TRANSPORT BY METRO STATISTIC

This covers exhaustive information on the total of travellers transported by the Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao Metropolitan Companies.
In the case of urban transport the study is exhaustive for all companies.

2. Inter-city Transport

Inter-city transport is that which is carried out between urban areas belonging to different municipalities.

2.1.1 NORMAL TRANSPORT

This is carried out within a pre-established itinerary and subject to prefixed timetables and calendars. Passengers are picked up at fixed stops. To carry out this type of transport, an administrative concession is required.
Transport services destined exclusively to serve a specific group of users, such as students or workers, are included.

Stratification, in the case of regular road transport, is carried out based on three class variables: the number of annual passengers, the number of active workers and total annual income:

Therefore, we have five different strata for regular transport. The fifth strata is exhaustive for the whole population of companies that belong to it and for the rest of the strata, a sample proportional to stratum size is extracted.

2.2.DISCRETIONAL TRANSPORT SURVEY

Discretional transport is that which carries out non-regular passenger transport services, in other words, without any itinerary or schedule (for example, discretional bus service for trips).

In the case of discretional transport companies, stratification is carried out based on the same variables as for regular transport. In the same way as the previous case, the last stratum, stratum six, is exhaustive and for the rest of the strata there is a sample proportional to stratum size. There are six population strata:

3. Dissemination of the information

The urban transport statistic provides information broken down by autonomous community (in the case of urban transport by bus and as long as statistical secrecy permits this) and company (in the case of transport by metro). Information is offered nationally for intercity transport.
