Sustainable development
Spain and the European Union
Society is increasingly conscious of the fact that, in order to guarantee welfare, it is necessary to make economic development compatible with social and environmental development. This new concept of progress is known as sustainable development, and it led the set of Member States to establish, in 2001, the Sustainable Development Strategy of the EU (SDS-EU), which links this sustainable development to environmental protection, social equality, economic prosperity and international responsibilities. In order to enable the implementation of concrete policies and actions, seven challenges are identified.
