Non-hotel Tourist Accommodation Occupancy Survey

Main results

  • Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation rose by 19.4% in April compared to the same month in 2024.
  • Overnight stays in apartments increased by 17.8%, those in campsites by 23.6%, rural tourism by 30.1% and those in hostels by 0.2%.

Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) exceeded 10.7 million in April, with an increase of 19.4% compared with the same month last year.

Overnight stays by residents rose by 43.9% and those by non-residents by 4.8%. The average stay was 3.6 overnight stays per traveller.

As Easter in 2025 occurred in April and in 2024 in March, it is useful to analyse these two months together. The report shows an increase in overnight stays of 1.4% compared with the same two-month period in 2024 (resident overnight stays decreased by 1.8%, while non-resident overnight stays increased by 3.6%).

Apartments

Overnight stays in tourist apartments increased by 17.8% in April. Resident overnight stays grew by 41.8%, and those of non-residents by 10.1%.

The average stay decreased by 5.3% to 4.5 overnight stays per traveller.

In April, 34.9% of the places available were occupied, 11.1% more than in the same month in 2024. The occupancy rate by bed-places at the weekend was 39.6%, 12.8% more.

Non-resident travellers accounted for 70.9% of overnight stays. The United Kingdom was the main market of origin, with 32.0% of the total.

Canarias was the preferred destination for apartments, with more than 2.2 million overnight stays and an increase of 16.2% compared with April 2024. Comunidad de Madrid had the highest occupancy, with 78.5% of the apartments available.

By tourist areas, the island of Gran Canaria was the preferred destination, with more than 766 thousand overnight stays. Costa de Barcelona had the highest occupancy rate for apartments: 85.7%. The tourist locations with the greatest number of overnight stays were San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Mogán and Arona.

Campsites

Overnight stays in campsites increased by 23.6% in April compared with the same month in 2024. Overnight stays by residents rose by 50.2%, while those by non-residents fell by 2.4%.

In April, 40.4% of the available sites were occupied, an increase of 9.6% in terms of the annual rate. The weekend occupancy rate reached 41.8%, an increase of 9.7%. Non-resident travellers accounted for 40.0% of overnight stays. Germany was the main market of origin, with 26.7% of the total.

Catalonia was the preferred destination in campsites, with more than 1.5 million overnight stays, rising 31.4% in the annual rate. Comunitat Valenciana reached the highest occupancy rate, with 60.3% of the available plots.

By tourist areas, the Costa Daurada was the preferred destination, with more than 624 thousand overnight stays. The Costa Blanca had the highest occupancy rate, with 75.6%. The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays were Benidorm, Mont-Roig del Camp and Cambrils.

Rural tourism accommodation

Overnight stays in rural tourist accommodation increased 30.1% in April compared with the same month in 2024. Overnight stays by residents rose by 50.5%, while those by non-residents fell by 1.5%.

21.3% of the bed places were occupied, 33.4% more than in April 2024. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 36.8%, with an annual increase of 21.2%.

Castilla y León was the preferred destination, with more than 162 thousand overnight stays, 29.7% more than in April 2024. Illes Balears achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 50.0%.

By tourist areas, the island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with over 118 thousand overnight stays. It was also the area with the highest occupancy rate, with 50.4% of the places offered.

Hostels

Overnight stays in hostels recorded an annual increase of 0.2% in April. Overnight stays by residents rose by 12.6%, while those by non-residents fell by 10.2%.

34.8% of the bed places were occupied, 9.3% more than in April 2024. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 40.5%, with an annual increase of 8.2%.

Galicia was the preferred destination, with more than 136,000 overnight stays. Comunidad de Madrid reached the highest occupancy rate, with 58.7% of the bed-places offered.

Price indices

The Tourist Apartment Price Index (TAPI) rose by 6.4% in April, compared to the same month in 2024, the Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) by 4.8%, and the Rural Tourism Price Index (RTPI) by 9.5%.
