Non-hotel Tourist Accommodation Occupancy Survey

Main results

  • Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation rose by 0.6% in April compared to the same month in 2024.
  • Overnight stays in apartments increased by 2.2% and those in rural tourism by 5.3%. Those in camp-sites decreased by 0.7% and those in hostels by 9.7%.

More information

Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) exceeded 11.6 million in May, with an increase of 0.6% compared to the same month last year.

Overnight stays of residents went up by 4.0%, while those of non-residents decreased by 1.5%. The average stay was 3.5 overnight stays per traveller.

Apartments

Overnight stays in tourist apartments increased by 2.2% in May. Resident overnight stays grew by 3.4%, and those of non-residents by 1.7%.

The average stay rose by 2.5%, to 4.4 overnight stays per traveller.

In May, 33.5% of the places available were occupied, 0.7% less than in the same month in 2024. The occupancy rate by bed-places at the weekend was 38.7%, 2.0% more.

Non-resident travellers accounted for 74.0% of overnight stays. The United Kingdom was the main market of origin, with 35.7% of the total.

Canarias was the preferred destination for apartments, with more than 2.0 million overnight stays and an increase of 12.6% compared to May 2024. Comunidad de Madrid had the highest occupancy rate, with 77.0% of the flats on offer.

By tourist areas, the island of Gran Canaria was the preferred destination, with more than 705 thousand overnight stays. Lanzarote had the highest occupancy rate for apartments: 83.0%. The tourist locations with the greatest number of overnight stays were Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and Arona.

Campsites

Overnight stays at campsites decreased by 0.7% in May compared to the same month in 2024. Overnight stays by residents rose by 5.2%, while those by non-residents fell by 6.6%.

In May, 38.0% of the sites on offer were occupied, a decrease of 3.9% in terms of the annual rate. The weekend occupancy rate reached 42.6%, an increase of 1.2%. Non-resident travellers accounted for 47.0% of overnight stays. The Netherlands was the main market of origin, with 21.7% of the total.

Catalonia was the preferred destination in campsites, with more than 1.8 million overnight stays, rising 1.6% in the annual rate. La Rioja achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 55.0% of the sites offered.

By tourist area, the Costa Brava was the preferred destination, with more than 780 thousand overnight stays. The Costa Blanca had the highest occupancy rate, with 71.1%. The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays were Benidorm, Mont-Roig del Camp and Toroella de Montgri.

Rural tourism accommodation

Overnight stays in rural tourist accommodation increased 5.3% in May compared with the same month in 2024. Resident overnight stays grew by 8.8%, and those of non-residents by 0.3%.

20.3% of the bed-places were occupied, 6.3% more than in May 2024. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 33.6%, with an annual increase of 1.1%.

Illes Balears was the preferred destination, with more than 204,000 overnight stays, 10.8% less than in May 2024. The region also achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 50.3%.

By tourist areas, the island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with over 134 thousand overnight stays. The islands of Ibiza and Formentera registered the highest occupancy rate, with 57.0% of bed-places offered.

Hostels

Overnight stays in hostels recorded an annual decrease of 9.7% in May. Spanish resident overnight stays fell by 8.4%, and those of non-residents by 10.7%.

35.4% of the bed-places were occupied, 3.3% less than in May 2024. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 38.5%, with a year-on-year decrease of 1.8%.

Galicia was the preferred destination, with more than 149,000 overnight stays. Illes Balears reached the highest occupancy rate, with 61.7% of the bed-places offered.

Price indices

The Tourist Apartment Price Index (TAPI) increased by 5.3% in May, compared to the same month of 2024, the Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) by 3.5%, and the Rural Tourism Price Index (RTPI) by 7.1%.
