The direct investment made by financial and monetary institutions is obtained from their statements to the Banco de Espa¿a in the integrated declaration system of their financial statements. For the other resident sectors, the data of the direct declaration system to the BE of external transactions and positions are complemented by those of the Registry of Foreign Investments (RIE) of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism. The use of the investment register is fundamental for the contrast of transactions and the detection of the absence of a declaration, especially to capture compensation transactions related to the restructuring of non-resident multinational groups carried out through foreign securities holding companies (ETVE). On the other hand, the RIE is a basic source for the recording of positions and for the estimation of reinvested profits.
