Energy consumption in the Mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries stood at 13,249 million euros in 2024, which represented a decrease of 14.8% as compared with the previous year.

The main energy products used were electricity (55.1% of the total) and gas (31.1%). As for the consumption of petroleum products, it accounted for 7.4% of the total.

Compared to the previous year, the sector's electricity consumption fell by 14.1%, gas expenditure by 19.6% and petroleum products by 5.2%.

Energy consumption1 in industry, by type of product. Year 2024

1 Energy consumption refers to products purchased to be used as fuel in the production process. For this survey, this consumption is quantified in monetary terms at current prices. Therefore, its evolution takes into account both the amount consumed and the variation in different energy products’ prices.

Electricity has been the main energy product in terms of consumption in industry in the last 10 years, with percentages ranging from 56.4% in 2015 to 55.1% in 2024.

With regard to gas, its consumption rose from 31.4% of the total in 2015 to 31.1% in 2024.

As for the consumption of petroleum products, it rose from 6.9% in 2015 to 7.4% in 2024.

Note: Until reference year 2021, the Energy Consumption Survey (ECE) was conducted biennially (only for odd-numbered years). Since 2022, the operation has become annual.

Resultados por ramas de actividad

The industrial branches with the highest energy consumption in 2024 were the Food industry (with 2,532 million euros, 19.1% of the total), the Chemical industry (with 1,848 million euros, 13.9%), and the Manufacture of other non-metallic minerals (with 1,782 million euros, 13.5%).

On the other hand, the activities with the lowest consumption were the Tobacco industry, the Manufacture of wearing apparel and the Leather and footwear industry.

Energy consumption represented 2.6% of the total goods and services purchases (purchases, work done by other companies and external services) made by the industry in 2024, as compared to 3.1% in 2023.

The branches of activity with the highest percentages in terms of this ratio were Mining and Quarrying industries (11.2%) and Manufacture of other non-metallic ore products (11.0%).

Results by branch of activity and type of energy product

In terms of the use of the different types of fuels, it is worth noting the electricity consumption in the sectors of the Manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (84.5% of the total energy consumption), the Manufacture of rubber and plastic products (83.2%) and Graphic arts and the reproduction of recorded media (80.4%).

As for gas, it accounted for 49.4% of energy consumption in the Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products, 46.7% in Coke and petroleum refining and 33.3% in the Textile industry.

Finally, petroleum product consumption represented 40.9% of the total in the branch of the Repair and installation of machinery and equipment, 31.8% in the Mining and quarrying industries and 25.0% in Furniture manufacturing.

Results by Autonomous Community

The autonomous communities with the highest industrial energy consumption in 2024 were Catalonia (with 20.4% of the national total), Comunitat Valenciana (13.0%) and Andalucía (12.9%).

Conversely, Illes Balears (0.2%), Canarias (0.5%) and La Rioja (0.8%) presented the lowest percentages.

In terms of the use of fuels, electricity consumption accounted for more than half of the total energy consumption in 15 Autonomous Communities and more than 60% in three.

The Communities with the highest percentages of gas use were Comunitat Valenciana (47.4% of the total energy consumption of the industry in the community) and Extremadura (40.4%).

On the other hand, Canarias (30.0%) and Illes Balears (28.3%) presented the highest consumption of petroleum products.

The use of other energy products (heat, coal, biofuels, and others) exceeded 16% in Region de Murcia.

Data reviews and updates

The data published today are final. All results are available on INEBase.

In accordance with the Commission's Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/137, the INE has begun to work on incorporating the new National Classification of Economic Activities CNAE-2025 in all its statistical operations.

In the case of the ECE, the first publication of results with CNAE-2025 will take place in 2027.

Methodological note

The Energy Consumption Survey is a structural survey targeting legal units with 20 or more employees whose main activity is included in Sections B (extractive industries) or C (manufacturing industry) of the 2009 CNAE.

This statistical survey provides information on the consumption of different types of energy products. These products are understood to mean those products acquired to be used as fuel (energy products used as a commodity or intended for resale without transformation are excluded). Energy consumption is quantified in monetary terms. Detailed results are offered at the national level and by Autonomous Community.

The sample of the Energy Consumption Survey is chosen as a subsample of the total sample of legal units of the Structural Business Statistics: Industrial Sector. Both operations share procedures for collecting and processing information.

Since its implementation in reference year 2001, this operation has been carried out and published biennially. Given the growing statistical need in energy matters, and in response to requests from some users regarding data availability, starting from 2022, the ECE will be conducted annually.

Type of survey:
annual continuous operation.
Population scope:
legal units with 20 or more employees, whose main activity is included in Sections B (extractive industries) or C (manufacturing industry) of the 2009 CNAE.
Geographical scope:
the entire national territory.
Reference period for the results:
the calendar year.
Sample size:
Double sampling (13,854 units in the first phase and 5,325 in the second).
Data collection method:
through questionnaires, mainly via the internet (IRIA system).
