Non-hotel Tourist Accommodation Occupancy Survey

Main results

  • Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation decreased by 13.8% in March compared with the same month in 2024.
  • Overnight stays in apartments grew by 2.8%. Those in campsites fell by 34.6%, in rural tourism by 28.8% and in hostels by 31.2%.

Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) exceeded 7.9 million in March, with a 13.8% decrease compared with the same month last year.

Overnight stays of residents decreased by 40.5%, while those of non-residents rose by 6.0%.

The average stay was 4.4 overnight stays per traveller.

Apartamentos

Overnight stays in tourist apartments increased by 2.8% in March. Those by residents decreased by 24.7%, while those of non-residents rose by 12.9%.

The average stay increased by 4.3% to 5.3 overnight stays per traveller.

In March, 34.0% of the places on offer were occupied, 0.3% more than in the same month in 2024. The occupancy rate by bed-places at the weekend was 38.0%, 1.4% more.

Non-resident travellers accounted for 80.2% of overnight stays. The United Kingdom was the main market of origin, with 27.0% of the total.

Canarias was the preferred destination for apartments, with more than 2.6 million overnight stays and an increase of 9.7% compared to March 2024. It also recorded the highest occupancy rate, with 80.3% of the apartments offered.

By tourist areas, the island of Gran Canaria was the preferred destination, with more than 1.1 million overnight stays. The island of Lanzarote presented the highest occupancy rate for apartments, with 88.1%. The tourist locations with the greatest number of overnight stays were Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and Arona.

Campsites

Overnight stays in campsites decreased by 34.6% in March compared with the same month in 2024. Spanish resident overnight stays fell by 56.7%, and those of non-residents by 6.5%.

In March, 38.8% of the sites on offer were occupied, a decrease of 6.9% in terms of the annual rate. The weekend occupancy rate was 39.5%, a decrease of 10.2%. Non-resident travellers accounted for 62.9% of overnight stays. Germany was the main market of origin, with 36.2% of the total.

Comunitat Valenciana was the preferred destination for campsites, with more than 670 million overnight stays, an increase of 18.4% in the annual rate. La Rioja achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 66.6% of the sites offered.

By tourist areas, the Costa Blanca was the preferred destination, with more than 334 thousand overnight stays. The region also achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 82.6%. The tourist resorts with the most overnight stays were Benidorm, Mazarrón and Vélez-Málaga.

Rural tourism accommodation

Overnight stays in rural tourist accommodation decreased by 28.8% in March, compared with the same month in 2024. Spanish resident overnight stays fell by 36.0%, and those of non-residents by 3.1%.

14.2% of bed-places were occupied, 21.4% fewer than in March 2024. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 28.9%, with a year-on-year decrease of 3.9%.

Castilla y León was the preferred destination, with more than 108 thousand overnight stays, 35.6% fewer than in March 2024. Canarias achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 40.4%.

By tourist areas, the island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with over 68 thousand overnight stays. The island of Tenerife reached the highest occupancy rate, with 43.5% of the places offered.

Hostels

Overnight stays in hostels recorded an annual decrease of 31.2% in March. Spanish resident overnight stays fell by 37.9%, and those of non-residents by 23.0%.

24.5% of bed-places were occupied, 20.8% fewer than in March 2024. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 29.8%, with a year-on-year decrease of 18.4%.

Comunidad de Madrid was the preferred destination, with more than 91 thousand overnight stays. It also reached the highest occupancy rate, with 53.9% of the bed-places offered.

Price indices

The Tourist Apartment Price Index (TAPI) increased by 3.9% in March compared with the same month in 2024 and the Rural Tourism Price Index (RTPI) rose by 7.6%.

In contrast, the Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) decreased by 0.2%.
