Fourth Quarter 2025 and Year 2025

Main results

  • The number of trips made by residents in Spain decreased by 5.4% in the fourth quarter to 36.3 million.
  • Total expenditure increased by 2.5% and exceeded 12,461 million euros.
  • Andalusia, Catalonia and Comunidad de Madrid were the main destinations.
  • In 2025, the number of trips fell by 4.7%, while spending increased by 2.6%.

Residents in Spain made 36.3 million trips in the fourth quarter, 5.4% less than in the same period of 2024.

Trips whose main destination was the national territory decreased by 7.1%, and those abroad increased by 7.2%.

Trips by purpose and accommodation

Leisure, recreation and holidays holidays decreased by 5.3% in the fourth quarter, Visits to relatives or friends by 6.4%, and for Other purposes by 10.3%.

As for trip made for Business and other professional purposes , they increased by 1.7%.

By type of accommodation, domestic trips where residents stayed with relatives or friends decreased by 9.3%. In foreign trips, hotel accommodation increased by 7.3%.

Main destinations and Autonomous Communities of origin

The main Autonomous Communities of destination for trips by residents in the fourth quarter were Andalusia (16.0% of the total), Catalonia (10.7%) and Comunidad de Madrid (8.6%).

In terms of origin, trips made by residents in the Comunidad de Madrid accounted for 16.9% of the total. This was followed by Catalonia (15.5%) and Andalusia (15.0%).

Removing the effect caused by the size of each Autonomous Community, those who travelled the most were residents of the Basque Country (938 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), Castilla y León (921) and Navarra (902).

Travel expenditure

The total travel expenditure in the fourth quarter reached 12,461.3 million euros, indicating an 2.5% increase as compared with the same period of 2024. Total expenditure on domestic trips increased by 0.2% and on trips abroad by 6.3%.

The average daily expenditure was 101 euros, with 80 euros spent on domestic trips and 163 euros for trips abroad.

By expenditure items, the highest expenditure on domestic trips was on accommodation, with 25.5% of the total and an annual increase of 3.3%. For trips abroad, the highest expenditure was on transport, with 31.3% of the total and an increase of 1.5%.

By main destination, the highest average daily expenditure was recorded for trips to the Balearic Islands (117 euros), the Comunidad de Madrid (116) and the Canary Islands (103). The lowest figures were in Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha (both 61 euros), and Extremadura (64).

By origin, the highest average daily expenses were made by residents of Balearic Islands (129 euros), Catalonia (113), and Asturias (111). The lowest were in Castilla y León (82) and Castilla-La Mancha and La Rioja (both 84).

Monthly data

December recorded the highest number of trips this quarter (13.2 million) and the longest average duration (3.6 overnight stays).

Excursions

The population aged 15 and over made 41.0 million trips in the fourth quarter, an annual decrease of 11.6%. Of these, 96.4% were for personal reasons.

Results for the whole of 2025

In 2025 as a whole, residents in Spain made 175.7 million trips, representing a decrease of 4.7% compared with the previous year. Domestic trips decreased by 6.1%, while trips abroad increased by 5.2%.

Overnight stays corresponding to those trips exceeded 788 million, with a decrease of 2.8%. In turn, the total associated expenditure rose by 2.6%, to 63,853.4 million euros.

87.0% of trips had Spain as main destination and 13.0% abroad.

Domestic trips accounted for 77.2% of overnight stays and 63.1% of the total expenditure, with an average daily expenditure of 66 euros.

In turn, trips abroad accounted for 22.8% of overnight stays and 36.9% of the total expenditure, with an average daily expenditure of 131 euros.

Methodological note

The objective of the Residents Travel Survey (ETR/FAMILITUR) is to provide information on the trips and excursions carried out by the population resident in Spain, both within the country and abroad, and their main characteristics (duration, expenditure, reason, accommodation, etc.).

In addition, it provides annual information on the percentage of the population travelling for personal reasons and investigates the reasons given by those who do not travel.

Type of operation:
quarterly continuous survey.
Population scope:
population aged 15 and over living in family homes in Spain.
Geographical scope:
the entire national territory.
Reference period of the results:
month, quarter, year (depending on the variable).
Sample size:
the effective monthly sample is around 8,200 persons, who provide information on the trips completed in the two months prior to the interview. The results of a reference month are obtained from around 16,400 questionnaires.
Sample type:
stratified three-stage random sample from the Georeferenced Address Framework. The first-stage units are census sections, the second-stage units are dwellings (a person aged 15 or over has been selected within each dwelling).
Collection method:
telephone and face-to-face interviews and online questionnaire.
