Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP)

August 2026

Main results

  • The annual variation rate of the August CPI stood at 4.3%, seven tenths above that registered in July.
  • The annual rate of core inflation decreased one tenth, reaching 2.9%.
  • The monthly variation of the general rate was 0.7%.
  • The annual rate of the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) stood at 4.6%, seven tenths higher than in the previous month.

The annual rate of the overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August was 4.3%, seven tenths higher than the previous month. This is the highest rate recorded since February 2023.

The groups that stood out most in terms of their positive influence in the annual rate were:

  • Transport, whose annual variation rose more than three points, to 9.5%, the highest since August 2022. This change was due mainly to the rise in the prices of fuels and lubricants for personal vehicles, which had decreased in August 2025.
  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages, whose annual rate stood at 2.3%, was seven tenths higher than in the previous month. This behaviour was mainly due to the increase in the prices of fruit and nuts which had fallen at a higher rate than in the same month of 2025.

The annual variation of core inflation (the overall index excluding unprocessed food and energy products) stood at 2.9%, one tenth lower than in the previous month.
