Consumer Price Index (CPI)
Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP)

September 2026

Main results

  • The annual variation rate of the September CPI stood at 4.9%, six tenths above that recorded in August.
  • The annual core inflation rate rose two tenths of a percentage point to 3.1%.
  • The monthly variation of the general rate was 0.3%.
  • The annual rate of the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) was 5.0%, four tenths of a percentage point higher than in the previous month.

The annual rate of the overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) in September was 4.9%, six tenths higher than the previous month. This is the highest rate recorded since February 2023.

The groups that stood out most in terms of their positive influence in the annual rate were:

  • Recreational activities, sport and culture, which recorded an annual rate of 3.6%, nearly two and a half points higher than in the previous month. This was due to the prices of package holidays, which had fallen less than in the same month of 2025.
  • Transport, whose annual variation rose by one point to 10.5%. This increase was due mainly to the prices of fuels and lubricants for personal vehicles, which rose and then fell in September 2025. The same occurred in the prices of carriage of passengers by air, which decreased to a lesser extent than last year.

The annual variation of core inflation (the overall index excluding unprocessed food and energy products) stood at 3.1%, two tenths higher than in the previous month.

Monthly evolution of consumer prices

In September, the monthly rate of the general CPI was 0.3%.

The groups with the greatest positive impact to the CPI monthly variation were:

  • Clothing and footwear, with a variation rate of 6.9%. This reflects the behaviour of prices at the beginning of the autumn-winter season. The impact of this group on the overall CPI was 0.205.
  • Housing, with a monthly rate of 1.1% and an impact of 0.134, due to the increase in electricity and liquid fuels prices.

On the other hand, the main groups with a negative monthly impact were:

  • Recreational activities, sport and culture, with a rate of -2.5% and an impact of -0.189, due to the lower prices of package tours.

Results by autonomous communities

The CPI recorded positive annual rates in all autonomous communities in September.

Castilla-La Mancha and Galicia recorded the highest increases (5.5% each) and Canarias and Aragón the lowest (4.4% both).
