INEbase / Demography and population / Analysis and demographic studies
Statistical use of the Municipal Register provides results which make it possible to carry out studies regarding the most frequent first names and surnames of residents in Spain.
If accessing the application What is a surname's provincial distribution? you may choose a surname and obtain, for each provice, the number of persons, born or resident there, with the chosen surname.
The application What is the frequency of a first name? allows you to choose a first name and see how many persons have that name in each province, decade of birth or country of nationality. You may also obtain a list with all the names of persons resident in Spain, along with their frequencies for the national total, the provinces and the countries of nationality.
In addition, tables are presented with the most frequent first names and surnames (100 for the whole of the national territory, 50 for each province of residency and 10 for each nationality and sex) and tables with the frequency of first names by decade of birth.
The section First names of newborns shows information on the 100 most common names recorded in the Civil Register for the national total and the 10 most frequent ones for the Autonomous Communities. This data is provided by the Birth Statistics, which is a part of the Vital Statistics, and is collected via the statistical birth bulletin.
NOTE: results are only shown when the frequency is greater than 20 for the national total and 5 for the provinces and nationalities.
