Definition

Proportion of transboundary breeds classified as being at risk of extinction

Calculation method

Based on the number of transboundary breeds existing in our country (according to the FAO definition, a transboundary breed is one that is reported by more than one country) for which population data has been provided, the percentage of these breeds that are at risk of extinction is determined. The calculation of breeds at risk of extinction is carried out on the FAO’s DAD-IS website and in accordance with the Guidelines for the In Vivo Conservation of Animal Genetic Resources (FAO, 2013). The data are supplied to DAD-IS by the National Breed Information System, ARCA. In turn, ARCA collects, on an annual basis, population data from all authorised pure-bred breeders’ associations in accordance with the EU Animal Breeding Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/1012 of 8 June) and Royal Decree 45/2019 of 8 February.
