  • 1) The data may be underestimated if the certifying physician has not followed the directive set out by the Ministry of Health and euthanasia was not reported on the death certificate.
    2) The Good Practices Guide to Euthanasia published by the Ministry of Health indicates that the illness that the person suffered or led him or her to request euthanasia must be noted as the initial or determining cause of death.
    3) Atrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) falls within ICD-10 code G12.2 Motor neuron diseases, which includes other illnesses besides from ALS. Given the importance of this disease among those person who request euthanasia, it has been opted to include it on the list independently, separate from the rest of diseases considered under code G12.2.
