Methodology summary

The survey on the Movement of travellers in hotel establishments (MVEH) provides information on the supply and demand of accommodation services in hotels.

This information is collected through a sample of about 6000 hotels, selected from the INE Directory.

The population covered by the survey includes all hotels, classified by golden and silver stars, three and two stars.

The basic data considered refer to seven consecutive days of the month, selected at random in such a way that the overall establishments account for the whole month.

The hotels supply monthly this information to the National Statistical Institute by means of of a questionnaire.

The latter is used for the elaboration of several indicators on the stays of guests at national level, by autonomous communities, provinces, tourist areas and sites.

The main indicators obtained are: number of guests and overnight stays by hotel category and country of residence of the guests, occupancy and average lenth of stay.

Information is also elaborated on the number of staff.

Results refer to the whole of the country and to provinces. Provincial information is first available at the Provincial Delegations because the entire survey is decentralized.

Definitions

Guest

Anyone staying for one or more consecutive nights in the same hotel accommodation.

Overnight stay

Occupation by one person of one or more bed-places or an extra bed within a hotel working day at the same establishment.

If a person occupies the same day two or more beds at different accomodations, he is considered to produce more than one overnight stay.

Occupancy per beds

Percentage ratio between the total overnight stays and the product of the beds by the days of the month to which these stays refer.

An establishment may have an occupancy under 100% and still not have beds available, since a double room or bed occupied by one person means a single overnight stay, even though the guest occupies two beds. In the case of extra beds, the occupancy may be higher than 100% since the occupant of an extra bed gives rise to an overnight stay despite not occupying a bed.
