The International Trade in Value Added (TiVA) Indicator Panel makes it possible to assess the impact on national economic activity (or that of the rest of the world) of the Spanish economy’s participation in global value chains from different perspectives, such as value added generated, related employment, or greenhouse gas emissions. All of this is carried out within the framework of the system of national accounts and is consistent with the macroeconomic aggregates of Spain’s National Accounts.

These indicators make it possible to analyze, for example, the value added or employment generated in the national economy by our exports, or that generated in foreign economies by our imports. They also make it possible to quantify what portion of the value of these exports corresponds to domestic or foreign value added or employment, to assess the impact of foreign trade in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, and to measure the Spanish economy’s degree of exposure to other countries and regions through global value chains.

This is highly relevant information that makes it possible to identify how our economy actually contributes to global value creation, rather than simply measuring its gross foreign trade, which often obscures each country’s role in international supply chains. This allows us to identify strategic dependencies, vulnerabilities to external shocks, and opportunities for diversifying source and destination markets.
